AS PART OF THE UNIGEM PROJECT, THE WINTER SCHOOL “GENDER AND VIOLENCE” WAS HELD IN 2024 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NOVI SAD

On Monday, February 19, 2024, the Winter School “Gender and Violence” was officially opened at the University of Novi Sad, which gathered more than 40 students from the region (Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia). The goal of the School was to shed light, through interactive lectures, on the connections between gender and different forms of violence to which women, as well as other socially sensitive groups, are exposed, and to take into account  the broader social context.

The school lasted until Friday, February 23, 2024, and it was jointly organized by the University of Novi Sad and the Gender Research Laboratory within the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory of the University of Belgrade, in cooperation with the TPO Foundation in Sarajevo and the University Gender Resource Center (UNIGeRC) of the University of Sarajevo, with the support of the UNIGEM regional project.

The invitation to participate in the School was addressed to male and female students of the third and fourth year of BA and MA studies, who are studying law, economy or social and political sciences or humanities at one of the partner universities in the UNIGEM project.

After the five-day School finished, students can choose one of the topics in the field of gender and violence, and – with the support of a mentor – to write a paper. The three best papers will be awarded.

The Winter School program included 17 interactive lectures, and the finale brought a panel discussion on gender and violence. Over the course of five days, these topics were covered: the connection between sex and gender, the body and power relations, patriarchy, sexuality, violence in the private and public sphere, discrimination, law, disability, as well as the representation of gender and violence in language, literature, and the media.

The School represented an opportunity for joint reflection on what we – as individuals and society – can do to overcome the “culture of silence” or “culture of denial” that surrounds gender-based violence, and how to create a society in which different forms of gender-based violence would be minimized.
