April 2010

THE PROMOTION OF THE OFFITICIAL START OF THE PROJECT
"STRENGTHENING THE ROLE OF WOMEN-101 REASON TO VOTE FOR WOMEN."

Between April and October 2010, in 36 cities and 105 rural areas we are looking for answers to the question, why vote for women?
13 organizations from 11 cities look for answers that will change the level of awareness on the position of women in BiH!

On April 15, 2010, in Sarajevo, the official start of the project "Strengthening the role of women-101 reason to vote for women" was promoted.
The goal of this project is not only to increase the number of women elected into positions in the government on the upcoming elections, but also to increase awareness on the position and role of women in the BiH society. The project will be implemented in 36 cities and 105 rural areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the citizens will be informed and encouraged to vote for women on the upcoming elections (the project does not advocate the interests of any party), to think about the impact their votes can have in initiating change, and to increase the influence of women in the political life in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also, as a part of the project, celebrities and influential individuals in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be interviewed in order to collect 101 responses to the question that awaits an anwer since the first democratic elections: WHY VOTE FOR WOMEN?

"They say that Bosnian women are good mothers, housekeepers and wives, so why then couldn't they be good ministers, bank directors, even presidents of the country? Considering that women make up 52% of the voters, maybe with this very campaign we can strengthen the role of women in politics," Bojana Tomašević, from UG INFOHOUSE.

At the press conference organized after the promotion, one of the speakers was The Swiss Ambasador, His Excellency Mr. Rolf Lenz, Ph.D, without whose support this project would not have been possible. He emphasized the importance of putting projects that aim to increase the involvement of women in the BiH society into practice to a country that wants to integrate into the rest of Europe. Support to this program is just one of many examples of efforts to strengthen democracy in BiH which is supported by the Swiss government.
According to the BiH constitution, both men and women in BiH have equal rights to participate in the political and public life of the country.
The largest donor to this project was the Swiss government, and the project was also supported by the Heinrich Boll Foundation and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation as a significant step towards development of the democratic society of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"We will not promote any party, leader, or political ideology," said Zilka Spahić-Šiljak from the TPO foundation, also adding that women in BiH parliaments hold about 16.4% of the seats which is less than the world average (18%), as well as less than in the socialist period. Since 2002, the percent of seats occupied my women has even dropped.

Collecting and promoting statements and answers of 101 celebrity to the question "Why vote for women?", workshops in over 140 places in BiH in which more than 3000 women are to participate, and informative campaigns are just some of the numerous activities of the following organizations: The INFOHOUSE Association, The TPO Foundation and The CURE Foundation along with their partners (Medica Zenica, The Bratunac Woman Forum, Vesta Tuzla, The Youth Association BD Brčko,  Lara Bijeljina, The United Women of Banja Luka, The Voice of Women Bihać, UG Bosansko Grahovo, Li-Woman Livno i BiH Woman Mostar).

The campaign will encompass over 20,000 people from 36 cities and 105 rural areas.
